The UK Round Table was established in January 1995 to provide a forum for discussion on major issues of sustainable development. Its main purpose was to identify ways of achieving development in a sustainable manner. In May 1999 the Government published its sustainable development white paper A Better Quality of Life. As well as setting out a fresh strategic framework for policy in this area, it announced the Government's intention to create a new and more powerful Sustainable Development Commission, into which the Round Table and our organisation, the British Government Panel on Sustainable Development, were to be subsumed. The UK Round Table published its Fifth and final Annual Report in July 2000.
