| Summary: | The third of the SDC's thematic reviews focuses on the role of government in enabling supermarkets to deliver a sustainable food system in the UK. |
![]() | Looks good overall. One comment - Fairtrade standards do include provisions to avoid of natural resource and biodiversity degradation, contrary to the statement on page 75. See www.fairtrade.net for more info on standards. |
![]() | This kind of doc could have been written 10 years ago and still have the same comments and recommendations. There is still a naievity about the power of supermarkets in terms of what they say and what they do. Always ask what is their motivation and it is always profit. The economy is about growth and that is all they are focused on, no matter what they say and do. That has to fundamentally change for any of this to be worth anything other wise you might as well publish this report in 20 years time and just change the dates. There is still a very naive view on food that everyone must/can have the same dietary needs. Therefore a lot of statements are only ever partly true and never fact. Also there are many ways to look at your statistics and examples. It always depends on your motivation and your perspective. I was hoping the SDC could of produced a more hard-hitting as well as a more well-informed report looking at all persepectives. While I understand that its always nice to balance and harmonize, but in today's world that will always be pushed down in the drive for profits, greed, power, etc. We need a more realistic, simple and holistic view of looking at a lot of these ideas and proposals and not everything should be driven by science. |
