The problem facing me as a reader was not so much the publication, though I was deterred by some of the "alphabet soup", but by the contradictory ratings given by reviewers. It would be more helpful if the latter could include some justification rather than the rather 'blanket' assertions.

Excellent report that gets to the heart of the matter. The problem will be pushing these kind of policy requirements in the face of defiantly self-interested industry lobbies, a half-hearted political elite and a general public that is bored, disengaged and disenfranchised: it's as if people would rather see us sink than swim.

This really is poor. The prejudices of the authors shine through. A lost opportunity.

This flies in the face of EVERY previous report on food sustainability. The Defra 2006 report is far more comprehensive and independent and came to the opposite conclusions: organic farming releases MORE GHG, MORE acid rain, MORE nitrogen pollution, and organically reared animals have WORSE conditons. The SDC is in danger of becoming a laughing stock -- releasing diammetrically opposite opinions depending who's in the driving seat. The well-known opinions of the authors; the very, very, short list of sources/references and their prejudicial nature condemned this exercise before it was begun.

This report is excellent in many respects, and I completely agree with its framework guidelines. However, although it quotes an NGO representative that a sustainable diet needs to take into account food security, it does not seem to have done so. There is no consideration, for example, on the benefits of greater local food production for increased food security. This is a great shame because otherwise the report does seem very balanced.
