SDC welcomes 80% CO2 target

17 October 2008

The Sustainable Development Commission welcomed the government’s announcement that it is to accept the Committee on Climate Change’s recommendation of 80% reduction in CO2 by 2050.

Jonathon Porritt, Chair of the Sustainable Development Commission, said: "This is a very important decision. The UK is the first country in the world to put any such target into law, and the first to adopt such an ambitious target. That sends out a very strong signal.

"What we as individuals and businesses need now is consistent leadership and decision making across all sectors of policy to make this happen. This target shouldn’t be seen as a burden, but an opportunity. In the current economic climate, driving energy efficiency, creating green jobs and developing new sources of energy will all generate economic value, as well as helping us toward our target."
