Government Gets to Grips with Sustainable Development

4 March 2007

04/03/2007

The SDC welcomes the Government's new Sustainable Procurement Action Plan.

Jonathon Porritt, Chair of the Sustainable Development Commission, says:

"This is a significant step forward. Government is really getting a handle on low-carbon, sustainable procurement.

"It's enormously important that Permanent Secretaries have been given responsibility for procurement. Proper, senior level accountability, combined with the restructuring of the Office of Government Commerce, should get the Government back on track.

"As our upcoming report on operations will show, there's still a long way to go before practice improves on the ground - but it seems that the Government has at last turned a corner. We'd now like to see the rest of the public sector follow suit."

The Sustainable Development Commission will continue to watchdog Government progress in this area.
