The Sustainable Development Commission (SDC) gives a tentative welcome to the Pre-Budget report, but warns that progress must be made on aviation. The SDC supports the Government’s announcements on zero carbon homes, biofuels, school buildings and carbon capture & storage.
According to the SDC, the top environmental measures announced in the Pre-Budget report are:
• Zero carbon standards for new homes within a decade
• Tax breaks for householders who install microgeneration
• Higher standards for new school buildings
• Boost for biofuels market
• Help for carbon capture & storage
However, the SDC cautioned that more progress would be needed on aviation and that the doubling of Air Passenger Duty rates was only a start.
Jonathon Porritt, SDC Chair, says:
“All in all, there are some good signs here. We were particularly pleased to see such stringent carbon standards set for new homes, and a much-needed boost for biofuels. The challenge now will be delivery. We look forward to seeing the Government lead the way in the Comprehensive Spending Review.”
