Commissioner highlights energy saving

Bernie_BulkinDuring a guest lecture at the Aberdeen Business School, Commissioner Bernie Bulkin, spelt-out the methods by which society can effectively look to reduce mankind’s carbon footprint.

Dr Bernie Bulkin, retired former chief scientist with BP, a leading expert on climate change, energy and transport, addressed the second annual RSA/RGU lecture sponsored by Ledingham Chalmers, with a talk titled:

‘Can Technology Save the Planet?’

During the talk, Dr Bulkin outlined the level of commitment society will have to make to achieve significant reductions in carbon emissions to provide the protection the environment requires – from using cars which can achieve more 'miles to the gallon', to wind and solar power collection.

Dr Bulkin said:

"Aberdeen and the north-east of Scotland have been leading players in the global energy market for decades. It is in an ideal position, with its vast array of experts in the field, to maintain that position as the future of carbon-reducing power generation develops."

"The impacts of climate change are global. For the UK, the challenge of moving to a low carbon society will involve fundamental changes in the operation of government and business, and in all of our lives as citizens and consumers."
.

David Laing, chairman of lecture sponsor Ledingham Chalmers LLP, said:

"We were privileged to have Dr Bulkin, an international authority on climate change, in Aberdeen to highlight some of the major issues society must address to reduce its impact on the Earth."

"Aberdeen is a global centre of development for the offshore oil and gas industry, with the need for the development of new technologies which will reduce our impact on the planet becoming an increasing focus."

"Forums such as the Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group (Areg) and the All-Energy event show the commitment we are making to changing our energy use for the better, and we hope that Dr Bulkin’s lecture will inspire further innovation and positive work in the region."
