The Sustainable Development Commission welcomes the launch of the consultation on the Scottish Climate Change Bill.

Maf Smith, Director of the Sustainable Development Commission Scotland said:

"Governments across the world know that climate change is a serious problem but many are shying away from taking the necessary action. The Scottish Government must be commended for their intention to lead the way for other countries.

"Tackling climate change is an economic necessity - the longer we leave things, the more it will cost our economy. If Scotland takes action now it can seize the major opportunities for low carbon businesses. This consultation is a necessary step towards the Scottish Climate Change Bill, which will help point Scotland in the right direction."

In 2007, Maf Smith along with 100 other leaders from across the UK, including Sir Alex Ferguson (Manager of Manchester United FC) and James Smith (Chairman of Shell), were trained by Al Gore to speak about climate change through the Cambridge University Programme for Industry - Leadership Programme.
