Budgeting for sustainability?

In November, the Sustainable Development Commission, along with much of Scotland, was waiting to hear the result of the Scottish Government's Strategic Spending Review.

On 4th December 2007, Commissioner Jan Bebbington presented the result of the Sustainable Development Commission’s analysis of the Spending Review to the Scottish Parliament’s Finance Committee.

The Committee was particularly keen to hear how our thoughts on how the spending decisions contribute to sustainable development and also what systems are in place to ensure action across the Government progresses towards sustainability. Written evidence was submitted to support Jan's presentation.

Following on from our original appearance the Committee wrote to the SDC asking for “constructive suggestions for improving the presentation of data in the budget documentation” to help trace the sustainability implications of the Government’s overall strategy. We wrote back to the Committee in January 2008.

On 16th January 2008, The Finance Committee published its Report on the Spending Review. This Report is welcome and the SDC will be reviewing comments made by the Committee; focusing in particular on those relating to sustainable development and performance management
