Resilience

Car in a lakeResilience is the ability of a system to absorb disturbance and still retain its basic function and structure. The Sustainable Development Commission is conducting an engagement exercise on this concept to better understand how it relates to sustainable development.

To stimulate debate our Commissioners and staff will be writing and collecting a number of think pieces which will be published here.

Our first think piece is a general overview of the link between sustainable development and resilence by Engagement Commissioner Lindsey Colborne.

Our second think piece is by DEMOS. DEMOS describes a UK society of increasing convenience and inter-connectedness which is brittle but not broken. Shocks, disruption and stresses will occur but we must accept that resilience is not just the responsibility of emergency services but something that we must all actively participate in.

Our third think piece is by Commissioner Alice Owen. She suggests that resilience might be a necessary but not sufficient condition for a place to support sustainable development and that this resilience would be enhanced by increasing the diversity of networks that serve it.

We look forward to receiving your feedback on these essays, either through the forum or the 'Your comments' sections on the think pieces. We also welcome your own think pieces, which, subject to our usual website comment guidelines, will be published in this section. We look forward to your thoughts and ideas.
