The SDC’s Commissioner for Climate Change, Energy and Transport Dr Bernard Bulkin was the guest speaker at this year’s Annual Sir Bernard Crossland Lecture at Queen’s University.
Dr Bulkin’s lecture titled: “Solving impossible problems” looked at the topical problem of climate change and global energy demand. He outlined the importance of viewing climate change through the lens of sustainable development and examined the potential for technology to assist in the solutions.
He highlighted the potential of energy alternatives such as biomass, hybrid technology, nuclear fission, carbon capture and storage and wave, wind and tidal power.
He stated: “It is imperative the UK becomes a leader in implementing efficient new technologies to promote growth whilst minimising fossil fuel use, it is only through delivering a sustainable energy system that can we tackle the twin challenges of climate change and energy security.”
Named after one of Northern Ireland’s leading engineers, Sir Bernard Crossland, Emeritus Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Queen’s, the annual lecture, organised by Engineers Ireland, aims to promote the manufacturing industry in Northern Ireland.
