The Commission was established in October 2000. The foundation for the Commission’s work came from two earlier initiatives - the UK Round Table on Sustainable Development and the British Government Panel on Sustainable Development. The work of these bodies focused attention on the need for more concerted action to progress sustainable development.
In 2005, the UK Government’s Sustainable Development Strategy charged the Commission with the role of ‘watchdog for sustainable development’, whilst retaining its advisory and advocacy roles. From April 2006, the Commission has additional resources and funding to help it carry out this extended role.
