Alice Owen

Alice OwenAlice is lead commissioner for local and regional issues.

Alice’s background is a business manager and strategic planner. An engineer by training, working in industry in the earliest part of her career, Alice has been working in the field of sustainable development since 1991. She has first hand experience of the chemical industry and of waste management operations in various former ICI plants in Merseyside, Teeside, Darwen and Grangemouth, as well as in France and Brazil. From 1996-8, Alice was a project manager for the Field Studies Council on a wide range of environmental education projects working with communities and NGOs around the Black Sea, in Galapagos and Borneo.

She first worked in the public sector as Head of Conservation and Policy at the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, from 1998-2001. In 2001, she established the sustainable development team in Yorkshire Forward, one of nine English regional development agencies. The Yorkshire Forward team developed projects that made new links between economic, social and environmental assets.

Alice established her own company, Integral Value Ltd, in 2004 working in the UK and in Vancouver, Canada, seeking to assist organisations in finding ways to realise commercial advantage from taking sustainability seriously. She then joined Arup and leads the firm's environmental and sustainability consulting work from Leeds.

Alice gained her first degree from Brunel University’s Special Engineering Programme, and she earned an MBA with distinction from Manchester Business School in 1999, on a scholarship provided by The Guardian newspaper. Alice is undertaking PhD research into urban systems and the diffusion of green technology at Leeds University.
