SDC Welcomes UK's Achievement in the EU Emissions Trading Scheme

The Sustainable Development Commission has today welcomed the announcement of the proposal for the next period of the European Union’s Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) by Environment Secretary David Miliband. The scheme is now expected to deliver additional savings of 8 million tonnes of carbon each year, roughly equivalent to the emissions of 4 ½ million households.

In response, Jonathon Porritt said:

"This is a serious achievement. Here the UK Government is showing real
leadership in tackling climate change, both internationally and on the
home front. This is exactly the determination which the SDC has been
calling for since the 2003 Energy White Paper. The UK has set a benchmark
which other countries will have to live up to.

"We are now looking forward to seeing this bold approach applied to the
Energy Review. If the Government is serious about taking forward its
international lead on climate change, it will be looking closely at how it
intends to plug the remaining gap for both the 2010 target and our long
term energy and climate change goals."
