The Sustainable Development Commission in Wales has congratulated Will Day on his appointment as new UK Chair of the Commission. He will take over from Jonathon Porritt on 27th July 2009. Will brings a wide range of experience to his new post at the SDC, from working on oil platforms, with the NHS and for aid agencies in Africa. He has also worked as presenter and producer for the BBC’s World Service.
Responding to his appointment, Will Day said:
"I am delighted to be asked to Chair the SDC. I take this on at a time of growing public and political understanding of the immense social and environmental pressures that are building up around the world and that affect us all. These realities will require thoughtful and decisive action by government at all levels, business and our wider society.
“Wales has huge potential to lead the way as a sustainable country. I have already heard great things about what’s happening in Wales, and am looking forward to working with the SDC’s team there to help the Welsh Assembly Government deliver on its ambitious new Sustainable Development Scheme.”
Wales’ First Minister Rhodri Morgan said:
"I warmly welcome the appointment of Will Day as the new Chair of the Sustainable Development Commission. Sustainable development is at the heart of good governance in Wales as our new Sustainable Development Scheme, One Wales One Planet, makes clear. I am looking forward to working with Will Day as we implement our plans to make Wales a sustainable nation."
Will’s most recent roles include Special Advisor to the United Nations Development Programme, Chairman of Water and Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP) and Sustainability Advisor to Pricewaterhouse Coopers.
The SDC’s Commissioner for Wales, Peter Davies said:
“Will brings a fantastic range of credentials to the SDC. His experience of social justice, tackling poverty and of private business will be a huge asset to the Commission’s work to promote sustainable development in Wales.”
