Learning and skills development

Formal and informal learning and skills development are an important means for those involved in financial decision-making to both develop their awareness of sustainable development in general, and equip themselves with the tools that they need to use their finance roles to support sustainable development at the local level.

Places to start include:

  • The Academy for Sustainable Communities was established by the UK Government to become the centre of excellence for the skills and knowledge needed to create sustainable communities. Its website has information on its learning programmes, research and expertise and useful links.
  • The Chartered Institute for Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) has a dedicated Sustainability work stream to supports its members in taking forward sustainable development. CIPFA recently held its first Sustainability Conference. Check out CIPFA's Sustainability pages.
  • The Improvement and Development Agency for local government (IDeA) offers a range of services designed to help councils improve, such as publications, websites and e-learning modules; development courses and programmes; and peer reviews and tailored support, including on the sustainable communities agenda.
  • The National School for Government works to help public sector organisations build capacity to support their strategic business objectives. It offers specific training on sustainable development and is also working on ways to embed sustainable development across its programmes.
  • Value Wales provides specific training on sustainable procurement, available to local authorities in England.
  • Training for sustainable development also happens at a regional and local level.
