How can my local authority do it?

In this section, we provide an introduction to some of the tools, levers and mechanisms that financial decision-makers in local government can use to progress sustainable development. We also provide links to more detailed information, toolkits and resources. Being an introduction, this section is by no means comprehensive; sustainable development in any case remains a developing concept in relation to local government finance where there are not always clear and proven methods, tools or examples of best practice.

This section serves as a starting point to get you thinking about the different means by which you and your local authority can use finance to support the delivery of sustainable development. We explore various tools and mechanisms under six different headings:
