Local government has a significant impact on the life of every citizen in the country

In England, it spends over a quarter of all public expenditure, employs over two million people, owns 11% of the housing stock and collects over 29 million tonnes of household waste per year (www.lga.gov.uk).

It is involved in a wide range of activities and services including education, transport, planning, social services, public health, procurement, energy consumption and provision, recreation and leisure, housing, regeneration and environmental stewardship.
By using its resources to contribute to sustainable development, local government can simultaneously support local economies, strengthen local communities and benefit the environment both locally and globally.
Finance is a key mechanism through which local authorities can maximise their contributions to sustainable environmental, social and economic development. Financing Local Futures is a resource, supported by CIPFA, the LGA and the IDeA, designed to help those involved in local government financial decision-making to develop their own organisations' contributions to sustainable development.
