Wood pellet manufacturer Balcas, will provide eco-friendly brites wood pellets to five Government buildings across Northern Ireland.
The buildings to benefit from the carbon neutral brites, include: Stormont Stables, within the Stormont Estate, Belfast (Department of Finance & Personnel); Inishkeen House, Killyhevlin Industrial Estate, Enniskillen (DARD Agricultural Offices); DVTA Test Centre, Chanterhill, Enniskillen (DVA and Planning Service); Academy House, Broughshane St, Ballymena (Water Service, Northern Division, and Land & Property Services); CAFRE Greenmount Campus, Antrim.
The conversion of these buildings to wood fired heating is part of a wider Government initiative to assess the viability of a variety of renewable technologies.
Manufactured by Balcas, brites are a natural, Fermanagh produced wood pellet fuel, which can be used in both central heating systems, and individual room heaters
The five buildings will use approximately 300 tonnes of brites per year - the equivalent of 150,000 litres of oil. The annual cost of heating all five premises using brites will be approximately £38,000 as opposed to £60,000 for oil - resulting in a combined total saving of £22,000 a year.
The Stormont Stables, situated in the grounds of Stormont Castle and managed by the Department of Finance & Personnel have recently had a new 100KW, KWB wood pellet boiler installed by Rural Generation Ltd. This is being used to heat Ministerial offices, newly refurbished office space in the old Stable block and also the existing office complex where workers provide support to the First and Deputy First Ministers.
Academy House in Ballymena, which is occupied, by the Water Service, Northern Division, and the Rates Collection Agency will use an estimated 44 tonnes of brites between August 2009 and July 2010 to heat an approximate occupied area of 2040m2
Inishkeen House in Enniskillen, which contains the DARD Agricultural Offices, will use an estimated 50 tonnes of brites between August 2009 and July 2010 to heat an approximate occupied area of 1800m2.
The DVTA Test Centre, Chanterhill, Enniskillen is expected to use approximately 54 tonnes of brites between Aug 2009 and July 2010
