Overview

This model developed by Piper will provide Edinburgh and Scotland with a unique and groundbreaking opportunity to significantly reduce carbon emissions.

Few organisations can claim to have the potential of Piper for school, home and community engagement in climate change education and behavioural changes.

With funding from the Climate Challenge Fund in place, the implementation and achievements of this innovative project will be seen as an important turning point in the realisation of the Scottish Government’s target of 42% reductions in climate change emissions by 2020.

All levels of government continually stress the need for community based initiatives and the role that personal responsibility must play in tackling climate change as opposed to potentially unpopular government legislation.

Two fundamental advantages that Piper has over its peers is its ability to quickly set up legally constituted Parent Council Eco Groups and the comprehensive access these groups will have to homes and the wider community via the children's school bags.

The formula of educational, interactive and inspirational DVDs and websites linked to incentives will prove to be successful in changing attitudes and behaviour.

Working in partnership with other organisations and agencies will enhance Piper’s potential, as will its inclusion in the School Improvement Framework.

Converting from fossil fuel dependency and reducing consumption will be seen as an exciting challenge, an investment in the future and a new sustainable quality of life by pupils, parents, individuals and communities.

Given the support it deserves, no organisation is better placed than PIPER to test the potential uptake and action of pupils, parents, individuals and communities to reduce climate change emissions.
