Overview

LONDON BOROUGH OF MERTON – SIGNIFICANT WATER SAVINGS WITH AQUAFUND
Saving money from the public purse has to be a priority for any local authority - and the London Borough of Merton is no exception.

As well as saving water, Merton is also making substantial monetary savings, having signed up with ADSM for an AquaFund Water Services Agreement.
The Borough contacted ADSM because it wanted to improve the efficiency of its water usage across all of its council buildings and other sites, including its community centres, day centres, leisure centres, libraries and council offices.

AQUAFUND FOR OPTIMUM WATER EFFICIENCY
The Borough signed up to ADSM’s AquaFund scheme, which provided all of the resources that Merton needed to achieve water efficiencies, including the funding, the people and the expertise.

To start the ball rolling, ADSM surveyed all of the relevant Council sites and carried out a water audit. They then compared Merton’s water consumption with established national benchmarks to see how the Borough’s consumption faired and to indentify over-consuming areas.

WATER EFFICIENCY STRATEGY FOR BEST PRACTICE
Armed with this information, ADSM then prepared a Water Efficiency Strategy for the London Borough of Merton showing the plan of action to bring consumption down to best-practice levels.

The plan laid out where advanced water-saving technology needed to be installed to ensure that water usage was reduced.

The technologies – including urinal and cistern controls - were provided, installed and maintained by ADSM as part of the AquaFund scheme.

WATER BILLS VALIDATED VIA WATER BUREAU SERVICE
Under the scheme, ADSM also provides the Council with an ongoing Water Bureau Service - validation for their water bills and verification of bills prior to payment; tariff negotiations to ensure that the best tariff is achieved with their water provider; and unusual consumption monitoring for early identification of leaks or other anomalies, so these can be addressed immediately.

The Borough’s consumption data is constantly monitored and trends analysed for ongoing benchmark conformance.

MONTHLY PERFORMANCE REPORTS
On a monthly basis Merton Borough is provided with a detailed water efficiency performance report for each site under the AquaFund scheme, together with an executive summary for management reporting.

The AquaFund scheme also provides all the ongoing assistance and advice that the London Borough of Merton requires relating to water consumption and efficiency.

IMMEDIATE SAVINGS
The London Borough is now reaping the benefits and has already seen significant reductions in its water use and resulting financial savings.

EVERY COUNCIL SHOULD SIGN UP
Projected to reduce their water consumption by up to 30% year-on-year across their Council buildings, including Merton’s Civic Centre, community centres, day centres and offices throughout the Borough, Merton’s Energy Manager looks forward to receiving his reduced water bills. “It is so easy. ADSM take care of everything - the audits, the installation and maintenance of the water saving measures - and the best part is that I don’t have to give them any up-front investment for these services. Every Council should sign up.”
