Lancashire County Council has recently set up a Lancashire Locals Climate Change Fund. £250,000 each year from 2008 to 2010 will be distributed between the 12 Lancashire Locals (the joint Committees within each Lancashire district) to support sustainable community projects on climate change.

Lancashire currently accounts for one fifth of total CO2 emissions in the North West. Whilst the Council recognises the negative impact that climate change will have in the region, it also acknowledges Lancashire’s own contribution to carbon emissions.
The Fund has therefore been set up to support community level schemes which will reduce the region’s contribution to climate change. It will also help Lancashire’s communities to cope with the impacts of climate change.
To ensure its effective distribution, the Fund will be allocated according to the carbon dioxide emissions per head of population per district. Grants of between £500 and £15,000 will be made to local projects such as; community micro-renewable energy schemes, energy efficiency measures, tree-planting and awareness raising.
By promoting grass roots action and community engagement, the Council aims to encourage initiatives that promote sustainablility in the long-term, such as micro-renewable energy projects. Community groups, voluntary organisations, charities, and town and parish councils will therefore all be eligible to apply for funding.
